Carnlough Lakes Walk

Limestone and Lakes — a guided tour of rural Carnlough with Robert Stewart

Dip your toes into the history and heritage of Carnlough Village and Lakes in a guided walking tour

Explore the stunning views of Carnlough on a guided coastal walk under the expert guidance of local tour guide Robert Stewart. Expect breath-taking views of the County Antrim coastline as Robert takes you off the beaten track to discover sites only accessible to local guides.

Starting at the Carnlough Heritage Hub, you will have the opportunity to discover a unique exhibition with a special focus on the industrial heritage of the village, which will set the scene for your walk.

Robert will firstly take you across to picturesque Carnlough Harbour, the focal point of the historic village, as well as a famous film location for the hit fantasy series Game of Thrones.

Brace yourself as you then make your way along the former mineral railway line, up a steep incline towards your next stop, Gortin Limestone Quarry. A wildlife haven and the cornerstone of the village's industrial heritage, the views from the quarry will take your breath away as you gaze out to sea and the distant shores of Scotland. Here you will hear special stories about the history and the way the quarry affected the lives of the local people.

Robert will point out the ruins of 'The Peatwork House' where peat was extracted and transported by overhead cable to Carnlough. He will take you over the brow of the hill to explore the shallow lakes stocked with trout to tease fishermen on the Antrim plateau. Lough Na Trosk and Little Trosk, both offering amazing views towards Garron Point, one of the outstanding headlands on the Antrim Coast.

On your way back to the Heritage Hub, you will pass more special lakes — Loughnabrick and Lough Fad — with a chance to gaze over the ridge down into the Glen.

Take this special opportunity to explore one of Northern Ireland's most scenic, yet least seen beauty spots.
